Am I Ready to Grade?

We often get asked this question and the answer is never quite straight forward. Here’s a few points to consider before asking to grade:

1. Are you training in the dojo regularly? The Online Dojo is a great tool to help you progress through the belt system but it was never designed to be the only way to practice karate. To master the syllabus properly, you need to attend classes in person so that your instructor can correct any mistakes. Pair techniques, impact training, flow drills, the groundwork kata and sparring cannot be practiced online by yourself.

2. Are you practising at home? When you’re not in the dojo, online practice is the next best thing and essential if you want to pass a grading with confidence. Access to the Online Dojo is included in your class fees.

3. Have you planned your progress? Failing to prepare and preparing to fail is a great adage when aspiring to grade. We have a grading checklist for every colour of belt, if needed.

4. Gradings are by invitation only. Students are assessed in the weeks before a grading. If Sensei sees that you are ready to grade, you will receive an invitation to attend via email. The email will inform you of dates, times, fees, what to bring, etc. If you haven’t received an invitation, you’re probably not ready. It would be quite unethical to allow anyone to just turn up for a grading and take their money knowing that they will fail so we don’t do that.

Learn your skills well, practice more, be patient and when the time is right, you’ll excel. You can find more info about our gradings at: https://loughtonkarateclub.co.uk/gradings/
