The Good Student Guide

All clubs are run with rules and guidelines so that everybody gets along.

Most rules/guidelines which apply to karate clubs are really just common sense and, in our club, it has never been an issue before where I’ve felt the need to explain in detail how students should behave. Recent events have shown that some guidance is needed so that everyone is clear about what is expected in the dojo. For the sake of harmony, here’s ten rules/guidelines that we should adhere to:

1. Please be on time. If you’re just a few minutes late, it’s ok to join in the class but with the minimum of distraction to others. If you’re 10 minutes late and you miss the warm up and stretch, do not expect to be allowed to join the class.

2. Always arrive at the dojo with a positive attitude toward your training. If not, you will be asked to leave.
3. All students are expected to make an effort in training. Making no effort creates a bad dynamic in the class, no one learns and everyone’s time is wasted.
4. Always be polite and respectful to your fellow students and instructors. Good manners are the first rule of self-defence.
5. Empty your mind of distractions and focus on your training. Distraction is the best way to fail at everything.
6. Help a fellow student by giving positive feedback and you’ll find that others will help you.
7. Personal hygiene is important if you are training with others.
8. Bring a full gi or gi bottoms and club t-shirt.
9. Control your techniques so as not to harm others.

10. Turn up to class regularly, especially if you want to grade. Consistency is key to your progress.
